  1. What does it mean to do something with heart? What’s it like when you do something without heart?
  2. Read Psalm 119:33-40. What role does God’s Word play in your goals, perspectives, and convictions? How can the Scriptures become a consistent guide for you?
  3. Read Matthew 5:17-20. Why do you think the law is so important to Jesus? What role does the law serve for Christians today?
  4. In Matthew 23:13-36, Jesus pronounces seven woes on the way the Pharisees were trying to achieve righteousness. (Righteousness means “ethical conduct” or “right living”.) What do you think is lacking with the righteousness of the Pharisees? How does Jesus want us to surpass their righteousness?
  5. Read 2 Corinthians 5:21. Why is Jesus so important in our efforts to live right?
  6. Read Romans 8:1-4. What is the role of the Holy Spirit in our efforts to live righteous lives?
  7. Woe to us if we try to live righteously through our own efforts. What have you learned this week? How will this change the way you try to please God?
