Study Questions

  1. Do you believe people have lost the ability to have civil discourse today? Why or why not?
  2. Read Matthew 7:1-5. People are sharply divided about political, religious and moral issues. Our attitudes, actions, and words toward those who disagree with us can be quite severe, and uncharitable. Why is this dangerous? Why is it unfruitful? How does Jesus expect of us?
  3. Read Matthew 7:6, 7:15-20. Why does Jesus mention pigs, dogs, wolves, thorn bushes, thistles, and trees? What is the difference between being judgmental and being discerning?
  4. Read John 8:1-8. What happens in this story? How did Jesus exercise discernment? What isn’t enough to just be “right”? What does it look like to “be” redemptive toward those who do evil?
  5. Read James 5:19-20. What does it mean for a person to “stray from the truth” and why does it matter? How can we “turn someone back from their error” without destroying the relationship? How is our obligation to “brothers and sisters” different than people in the world?
  6. Read 1 Corinthians 5:1-5. Out of fear, churches opt for tolerance over discipleship. How does tolerance mask arrogance? How should we respond to sin (in attitude, action, and words?) What is the ultimate goal of church discipline?
  7. How can we elevate civil discourse with outsiders? How can we deepen one-another’s holiness through discipleship without destroying one another?
