Study Questions

  1. When were you the hungriest? What did you do to satisfy your hunger?
  2. In John 5:31-47, what kind of testimony does Jesus list on his behalf? How does this evidence put us on trial? How were the Jews in this passage reading scripture by totally missing the point?
  3. Read John 6. The fourth sign performed by Jesus in the gospel of John is the feeding of the 5,000, which is combined with one of Jesus' "I am" statements. How did Philip and Andrew respond to the problem of feeding so many? Why did Jesus ask them? How do you think they felt when Jesus fed everyone and had baskets of leftovers? What can we learn from this account?
  4. A fifth sign performed by Jesus in the gospel of John is walking on the stormy waters. How does this sign differ from the other miracles we've read about? At Passover time, what Old Testament event dealing with water would the disciples think of? Why are those connections important?
  5. Jesus claims to be the Bread of Life. What does he mean? How do the people respond? The disciples? What do you think it means to eat Jesus' flesh and drink his blood?
  6. Every person hungers for physical food as well as spiritual food. In what ways has Jesus satisfied the spiritual hunger in your heart? Why do people sometimes seem to lose their hunger? Why did the disciples stick with Jesus (6:60-69)?
