Study Questions

  1. The Greek myth of Sisphyus tells of a king who was punished by being forced to roll a huge boulder up a hill daily only to have it roll back down on him at the end of the day. What makes you feel like Sisphyus?
  2. Read Romans 7:1-25. How does Paul's marriage metaphor explain our relationship with the law? How can obeying the law be like rolling a boulder up a hill? How has Jesus changed this predicament? Right now, do you feel more like you are "married" to the law or married to grace?
  3. Read Romans 7:14-25. Why is it hopeless to live a God pleasing life simply through your own effort? How does Jesus take us from "wretched" failures (vs 24) to victorious overcomers?
  4. Read 1 John 5:4-5; 11-12; 18-21. What does the apostle John add to your understanding of your need for Jesus and your ability to overcome sin through Him?
  5. In Romans 7:6 Paul says those who put their faith in Christ can now "serve in the new way of the Spirit" instead of fruitless efforts at law keeping (also see Galatians 2:19-21). How does this news change things for you? What are some signs that you are living in this new way of the Spirit?
