Study Questions

  1. Has the death of a family member or friend caused you to question God's love? Explain.
  2. How can we explain the seeming conflict between Jesus' love for Lazarus and his purposeful delay in helping him (11:4-5). How can those verses help us when we feel abandoned by God in a time of great need?
  3. What do you see of Martha's doubt and faith in her statements to Jesus (11:17-27)? How is her faith stretched? Compare and contrast Martha and Mary's interactions with Jesus.
  4. In chapter 11, Jesus performs his last of seven signs in the raising of Lazarus and gives us his fifth "I Am" statement, "I am the resurrection and the life." Why will this sign and statement be so important to Jesus' followers in the vents they will soon be facing at the end of this book?
  5. Read Jesus' words in 11:25-26. What kind of "life" and "death" is Jesus referring to? How should this statement radically alter our view of life and death? Read 11:33-37. What do we learn about grieving from Jesus? Why did Jesus weep?
  6. Why do you think the people were so excited to see Jesus in 12:9-20? What were they expecting him to do? How did Jesus attempt to correct their expectations? What are your expectations for when Jesus returns as Judge and King?
