Study Questions

  1. Put yourself in Nicodemus' shoes. What would you have thought when hearing about this "new birth" for the first time?
  2. What is your impression of Nicodemus (John 3:1-21)? Why do you think he comes to Jesus at night? What was he looking for?
  3. Why do you think Jesus turns the conversation to a new birth? How does Nicodemus respond? When have you found God's Word to stretch you or cause you to ask, "How can these things be?"
  4. Why does Jesus call us to a new birth? A new family? From darkness to light? What is the alternative? How and why does our response to God's Son determine our destiny (vv.18-21)? How would you describe your response?
  5. If someone asked you to explain how to be born again, what would you tell them? How might Jesus' words in John 3:5-21 and Paul's in Romans 6:1-3 help you explain God's healing love?
  6. If you haven't memorized John 3:16-17, consider doing so this week. Rehearse it together as a group.
