Study Questions

1. How do you react to displays of hostility? What is it like to work or live in a hostile environment?

2. How were you encouraged, convicted or challenged by this week’s message on hostility?

3. Read Matthew 5:1-12. How might different listeners to Jesus’ sermon have responded? A Roman Centurion, a slave girl? A tradesman? A religious leader? The politically connected?

4. Why is it so difficult to live a life of sacrificial love instead of responding with hostility? What might help us do so?

5. Share the story of a Bible character who resorted to hostility? Share the story of a Bible character who was able to live a life of sacrificial love.

6. Living for Jesus includes (1) imitating his character, (2) studying and obeying his commands, (3) serving others, and (4) focusing on eternity. Which of these four is your strength? Which needs more intentionality?

7. What specifically can you do to break the cycle of hostility this week: At home or at work? With family or friends? Online? In our culture?
