Study Questions

  1. Read Romans 9:1-18. What was Paul so upset about? When have you had an intense desire to see someone find Jesus? What do you think it means to be "a child of the promise" (vs 8)?
  2. Read Romans 9:19-29. If you are the clay and you trust the potter to form you, what is the result? What if you don't fully trust Him, if you resist?
  3. Read Romans 9:30-33. What does it mean that Jesus is the stumbling stone? How are the following phrases from chapter nine related: "children of the promise are counted as offspring" (vs 8); "a righteousness that is by faith" (vs 30); and "whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame" (vs 33)?
  4. Read Matthew 13:10-23. To what do the four types of soil refer? All of the seed is the same, so why don't all the soils produce the same amazing results? How might verses 14-15 be of help to you when you are sharing the good news of Jesus?
  5. In Romans 9, Paul was intensely focused on the lack of receptivity of the Jewish people to the good news of God's mercy through Jesus. Do you have such agony over anyone? Why or why not? Whose heart are you praying will be receptive to the seeds you are planting?
